OUR STORY

Sequoyah United Methodist Church has a rich history dating back to its humble beginnings in 1965. Originally established in a small building with services held in varying community buildings, the church quickly grew and moved into its current location in 1968. What began as a small group of dedicated men and women has blossomed over the past six decades into a vibrant community of faith.

About Us

The story of Sequoyah began in February 1963, when property was secured for what would soon become a new community of faith. Two years later, on May 9, 1965, just 24 people gathered for the very first worship service. In those early years, the congregation met in various spaces around Fayetteville—including Mt. Sequoyah, the VA Hospital, and the Wesley Foundation—while faithfully awaiting a permanent home.

In 1965, Sequoyah was officially assigned its first pastor, Reverend Arvest Lawson, who preached his first sermon on June 6, the same day the church welcomed its first confirmed members. At first, the congregation was simply known as the “New Methodist Church.” Later that year, a majority vote selected the name “Sequoyah Methodist Church,” and in 1968, the church officially adopted its current name: Sequoyah United Methodist Church.

Those first two years brought challenges, with no permanent building and limited growth. But in 1968, hope became reality as the first phase of Sequoyah’s building was completed. This provided the congregation with a true home, a renewed sense of stability, and the foundation for the vibrant ministry that continues to this day.

Who We Are

Sequoyah United Methodist Church has been a place of worship, fellowship, and service in Fayetteville for 60 years. From our humble beginnings with just 24 people gathered for the first service, God has grown Sequoyah into a thriving community of faith where all are welcome.

As United Methodists, we are rooted in Scripture, guided by Wesleyan tradition, and committed to living out our faith through worship, discipleship, and service. Our mission is simple yet powerful. It shapes all that we do from gathering around God’s Word in study and worship, to serving our neighbors near and far, to nurturing children and families in faith.
